Noun [Proto-Celtic]

Etymology: Unknown; Matasović gives no etymology. Irslinger notes a few previous old suggestions: * Pedersen relates this to Lithuanian krekti (“to clot”), present stem kreñk-, but the -n- is a nasal infix, being unhelpful in providing a source for the -n- needed to produce the long vowel in Irish créacht, a noun. * Lane (1937) relates this to Proto-Germanic *skrinkwaną (“to shrink”).
